When a septic system is working properly, new wastewater from the house pushes the separated wastewater in the septic tank into the leachfield, which provides additional treatment by allowing the wastewater to trickle through a filtering system composed of perforated pipes or chambers, gravel and soil. Bacteria in the soil also helps to break down the waste. Maintaining a clean system is necessary to ensure you have a safe and sanitary wastewater setup.

Helpful Hints for a Healthy Septic System

Do’s

  • Know the location of your septic tank and leachfield.
  • Have your septic system inspected annually.
  • Have your tank pumped out by a licensed contractor, approximately once every year, or as often as your system manufacturer suggests.
  • Make sure to keep your septic tank cover accessible for inspections and pumping. Install risers if needed.
  • When there are any signs of failure, only professional septic specialists should service your septic system.
  • Keep detailed records of any repairs, pumping, inspections, permits issued, and other maintenance activities.
  • Always conserve water to avoid overloading your system.

Don’ts

  • Never enter your septic tank, toxic gases are produced by the natural treatment process in septic tanks, and can kill someone in minutes.
  • Never allow anyone to drive or park over any part of the system.
  • Never plant anything over or near the leachfield except grass that doesn’t require irrigation. Roots from nearby trees or shrubs can clog and damage the drain lines.
  • Never dig in your leachfield or build anything over it, and don’t cover the leachfield with a hard surface such as concrete or asphalt.
  • Avoid throwing trash into your toilets. Trash can accumulate in your system causing clogs and damage.
  • Never dispose of chemicals into your toilet or drain! Certain chemicals and cleansers can poison your septic system and the area groundwater.
  • Never allow livestock onto the area where your leachfield is located.
